Welcome Speech by Ombudsman ‘Aisea Taumoepeau
INTRODUCTION
The international concept known as the “Ombudsman” started in Sweden. The Swedish Parliamentary Ombudsman was instituted by an Instrument of Government in 1809, to safeguard the rights of citizens. It was a supervisory agency independent of the Executive. The word “Ombudsman” is derived from the Swedish equivalent of “Protector of the People”. The concept of the Ombudsman has now spread to all corners of the world.

Deputy Prime Minister's Speech
It is with great honour that I accept the invitation to deliver this speech which marks the re-establishment of the former Commissioner for Public Relations as the Office of the Ombudsman here in Tonga.
In the pacific context, Tonga is the latest sovereign nation to adopt the title of Ombudsman with the passing of the Commissioner for Public Relations Amendment Act 2016 in the Legislative Assembly.
